The spaces, the composition through light and the well-proportioned distributions of the interiors of our projects. In other words, we have a "religious" love for the visual. However, there are three other senses (taste would not enter here) that we should not leave aside. Comfort comes into play in architecture by encompassing four of our senses: sight, touch, hearing and smell. This is a concept closely linked to well-being, but it also has to do with the architectural experience that each of us has (psychological comfort). For example, what happens if we enter a building where there is a smell that we identify as unpleasant? It doesn't matter if the interiors have excellent visual quality and proportions. " This very subjective concept is scientifically parameterized and classified into different types of comfort, as many as there are senses we have: Visual comfort . It manages environmental parameters and the activity that the user carries out. Acoustic comfo It highlights both insulation and acoustic conditioning. Olfactory comfort . Very focused on indoor environmental quality and air renewal. Psychological comfort. The global perception by our mind of all the above.

Much of the research and empirical determination of environmental comfort was carried out by the Danish scientist  Povl Ole Fanger at the beginning of the 20th century. Discomfort can cause fatigue, accidents, awkward positions, and lack of sleep. Comfort in architecture provides proactivity, security, comfort and rest to its inhabitants. As architects, we must not forget that: The architecture we design, in addition to being beautiful and proportionate, must be comfortable and generate well-being for its occupants. It is achieved only in one way: by incorporating comfort strategies into architectural design .



Solutions high in comfort and (also) low in Carbon There are of course different ways to provide comfort to our buildings. One of them would consist of "patching" the existing building in order to have a minimum of comfort inside. Normally the solution for these cases is usually the option of implementing more powerful air conditioning systems and adding screens and acoustic membranes, for example. A case that does not prevent, however, the continued existence of discomfort due to asymmetry of the radiant temperature in the areas close to enclosures and bad odors. However, fortunately, passive, efficient and low-carbon architecture is characterized by taking environmental comfort into account from the beginning . Here we give you some strategies to integrate comfort concepts into your projects: Use sun protection to prevent glare from the sun. Continuity of thermal insulation throughout the building envelope. Acoustic insulation in façade openings opting for insulating and efficient windows . Acoustic insulation in forged floors and ceilings with suitable materials. Design common use spaces in the building. Control and improvement of air quality with forced mechanical ventilation equipment.
